Our next Surface Transportation committee meeting will be, Thursday, June 2, at 7:30am in the Chamber BoardRoom (26th Floor). Our speaker will be Deb Miller, Kansas Secretary of Transportation. The Secretary is the Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas Department of Transportation. The Secretary is responsible for all KDOT activities.
Deb Miller was appointed Secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation by Governor Kathleen Sebelius effective January 13, 2003. Miller is the first woman to lead KDOT and has more than 18 years of experience in the field of transportation. Prior to this position, Miller was Chief Planning for HNTB, a nationwide firm of architects, engineers and planners. This is her second tour of duty for KDOT, having served the State from 1986 to 1997 as the Director of the Division of Planning and Development.
The Kansas Department of Transportation has a strong history dating back to 1917 when organizing intrastate travel was just beginning. Now, more than 3,000 employees continue the tradition with the agency's primary activities being road and bridge maintenance; transportation planning, data collection and evaluation; project scoping, designing and letting; contract compliance inspection of material and labor; federal program funding administration; and administrative support. KDOT's headquarters are in Topeka with six District Offices, 26 Area Offices and 112 Sub-Area Offices across the state.
