Surface Transportation Committee

The Greater Kansas City Chamber's Surface Transportation committee meeting is coming up on Thursday, March 3rd, 7:30 a.m., here in the Chamber's board room.

Our Speaker will be Rich Markey from Clarkson Construction Company with a presentation on the Paseo Bridge. Matt Rooney from Senator Bond's office will be joining us to give an update on the Federal Transportation Reauthorization Act, (TEA-21), which expired on September 30, 2003. TEA-21 was enacted on June 9, 1998, and authorizes the Federal surface transportation programs for highways, highway safety, and transit for the 6-year period from 1998-2003. The President signed a sixth extension into law but this extension expires midnight May 31, 2005.

Also, Le Ann Kell from MODOT will be present to inform us about MODOT's current funding priorities.

HNTB's Jerry Mugg gave an informative presentation on Toll Roads at the February Surface Transportation meeting. The Chamber's 2005 public policy agenda supports examining reasonable revenue sources such as toll roads to address the current transportation funding issues so this will continue to be a priority issue for us. The Chamber validates parking for the 811 Main Garage, Commerce Garage located on 10th Street between Main and Walnut streets, or the new Tower Garage located between 9th and 10th on Walnut.
