The ATHENA Award is presented annually by The Chamber at a private reception in the fall. The award honors a person "who has achieved the highest level of professional excellence, devoted time and energy to the community, and, especially, opened the doors of leadership opportunity to women."
The award was created by the Lansing, Michigan, Chamber of Commerce in 1982. Today, the ATHENA Award program includes more than 375 U.S. cities and has recognized more than 2,600 women and men for their accomplishments, community service, and opening pathways for others.The award is named for Athena, the Greek goddess of intelligence and wisdom, arts and sciences. The award was first presented by The Chamber in 2001. Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences has been the sole presenting sponsor since the inception of the award.
